Regarding Cosby

There are no heroes in entertainment.

Creative achievements are to be acknowledged, bravery in self-discovery or challenging narratives that undermine a power elite, perhaps. But a hero? To label a given individual heroic for performance and accruing wealth? This undermines what the phrase “an heroic endeavor” maps to semiotically.

Actors are incapable of being heroic as an actor. They may portray an heroic figure, and sculpt out a space for a discussion of heroics for a specific cultural context, but it is to our detriment to conflate an individual’s success with the selfless bravery of an individual in the face of overwhelming odds.

In the worst cases, when we confuse entertainers for heroes, our entertainers will not simply fail us, they will horrify us.
